Jim “Scoop” Veltman
Jim Veltman, born in Brampton, played lacrosse for the Brampton Excelsiors at the Minor, Junior and Major competitive levels. Jim “Scoop” Veltman was a four-time Mann Cup winner. He captained the Toronto Rock for 10 seasons and played for the Ontario Raiders and the Buffalo Bandits in the National Lacrosse League (NLL). Jim won three NLL championships with the Bandits and then five more with the Rock. He was inducted into the National Lacrosse League Hall of Fame in March, 2009.
Jim led the National Lacrosse League in loose balls in 14 out of the 16 seasons he played, earning him the nickname “Scoop”. In February, 2006, Jim reached a milestone as he picked up his 2,000th career loose ball. Also, he set the single season record for loose balls with 226 in the 2006 season.
Jim was the first recipient of the National Lacrosse League Sportsmanship Award in 2002, and was named NLL MVP in 2004. He was also the first recipient of the Toronto Rock’s Les Bartley Award. In his international lacrosse career, Jim was Captain of Team Canada and led the team to win the 2003 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship. He also won the President’s Cup Most Valuable Player Award and was voted to the first All-Star Team in the President’s Cup Tournament. Jim scored one goal and picked up four assists and 17 loose balls in his last career game on April 27, 2008.
Jim was a great, well rounded player and leader both on and off the floor. Jim and his wife Teresa have travelled and done volunteer work in Uganda for 17 months. Jim has been married to Teresa for 18 years and they are the proud parents of Kris and Sara.
