Martha Branigan

Branigan has proved herself to be totally committed towards sport in Brampton. Her dedication includedover 30 years of volunteering with the Brampton Canadettes Girls Hockey Association, which includedserving terms as President, 1st Vice-President of Representative teams, Vice-President of Houseleague,Co-Tournament Director, Ice Scheduler, Equipment Director, Publicity Director, Ways & Means Directorand Head Timekeeper. She also served as Houseleague and Tournament Convenors, and on variousother committees over the years. Martha started on the Canadettes executive at the tender age of15. She was also asked to participate on several committees for the Provincial and RepresentativeAssociations, including two years as an evaluator at the Team Ontario Under 18 selection camp.

Branigan coached various Brampton Canadettes Rep and Houseleague teams for 30+ seasons. During that time,she guided these teams to numerous Provincial, League and Tournament Championships. Martha first went behindthe bench at 14 years of age.

She has attained certification as a NCCP Intermediate level hockey coach, a CAHA certified Initiation ProgramInstructor, a NTCP certified Hockey Trainer, a Grassroots certified Softball Coach, an Advanced Level CASA OfficialScorekeeper, a CAHA certified Hockey Administrator and a certified NRCP Level 2 Referee. She also refereed withthe Canadettes for five years and was an umpire for the Brampton Men’s Mushball League for two summers.

Martha’s teams were always competetive, but above all, she hopes to be remembered for hercommitment to developing all her players and teaching them to play their best; always respecting therules, the officials, their team mates and their opponents. Sports for Martha was more about teachingboth a love for the game and important life skills, rather than “winning at all costs”.
