Elwood McKenna

Elwood McKenna has had a long and distinguished coaching career. He began by serving inmany capacities with the Brampton Minor Soccer Association from 1970 - 1979, including coach,manager and director. In 1972 he also began coaching and managing hockey for the BramptonMinor Hockey Association. Elwood served as a Director of the Brampton Minor Hockey Associationfrom 1975 - 1979 and again from 1981 - 2000, during which time he was a convenor, equipmentmanager and sponsorship director.

Elwood exemplifies the ideal coach. His coaching philosophy emphasizes hockey skills,sportsmanship and playing for the fun of hockey, as well as building confi dence in his players.

Elwood has also taken a keen interest in helping others and has shown his players how theytoo can help others. Year in and year out his teams consistently raise the most money for the Easter SealsCampaign.

In 1988 he was awarded the Celebration 88 Award as a coach who exemplifi es the ideals of the Olympic Spirit.In 1989 he was also awarded the “ Heart of Gold Award” by Air Canada for his outstanding contributions to thecommunity. In 1992 he won the Ken Long Award, presented annually by the BMHA. In 1993 Elwood was awardedthe George L. Kitchen Award at Maple Leaf Gardens for outstanding contribution of personal effort and service forpromotion and success of the “Timmy Tyke Hockey Tournament.” Elwood was further recognized in 1999 when hewas awarded the Ontario Minor Hockey Association’s Bell Mobility Volunteer of the Year.

The City of Brampton has twice awarded Elwood’s contributions. In 1987 he was selected as a recipientof a Long Term Service Award. In 1999 Elwood received a Long Term Service Award in recognition of his25 years of volunteer service.

Elwood McKenna has coached countless players throughout the past twenty-nine years and has left them witha positive lasting impression of the years they spent together. Elwood is an outstanding contributor and anextraordinary role model to the youth of our community.
