Gwilym Evans

A resident of Brampton from the age of two, Gwilym was a prominent local sportsman inBrampton during the 1940’s, 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970s. He was actively involved in three sports:lacrosse, hockey and basketball, but it was in the game of lacrosse that Gwilym distinguishedhimself both as a player and a builder.

Gwilym played on, and contributed to, numerous Excelsior Ontario Lacrosse AssociationChampionship teams. As a player, he was a leading scorer throughout his career with theBrampton Excelsiors at the Minor, Jr. and Sr. levels. In 1948, he was selected to bolster the St.Catharines Jr. A Athletics in their quest for the Minto Cup. As a Builder, he dedicated over twenty-five yearsof service to the Excelsiors’ Lacrosse Club, including ten years as General Manager of the Sr. A Excelsiorsand over twenty years as an Executive Member.

His contributions led to numerous provincial lacrosse championships at the Minor level and three CanadianChampionships and four Eastern Canadian Championships at the Jr. and Sr. levels. Gwilym also devotedalmost a decade of his time to the Brampton Minor Hockey Association as a Coach and a General Manager,and in the late 1960’s he managed the Brampton Rubin Rocketts of the Metro Jr. B Hockey League forthree years. In 1989, he was selected as one of the inaugural lifetime members of the Brampton ExcelsiorLacrosse Club.

His sustained commitment contributed to the development of outstanding athletes and championship levelsof performance at the local, provincial and national levels in Brampton. His civic-mindedness was noted inother forms of community involvement as well. He was a well-known tenor soloist during his day,and a member of different service groups. Gwilym represents the second of four generationsof Evans family members who have made important contributions to lacrosse in Brampton, aswell as the ongoing goal of building Brampton as a healthy, active community.
