Hans Porten

Hans is proud to be a member of the Brampton community. His involvement includes beinga coach for Canadian Cross Training Club, swimming coach, triathlon coach and he isalso a certified yoga instructor. Hans and his wife, Uli, also help lead walking and runningprograms in Brampton on a regular basis.

Hans was undefeated in multi-sport racing in Canada in 2006. He won the CanadianNational Triathlon Championships Men’s 50 Masters Division. He was later named Ontario’sMasters (over 50) Athlete of the Year. Hans is currently up for consideration for the CanadianMasters Athlete of the Year Award.

In Lausanne, Switzerland, Hans raced a very competitive field in the Men’s 50 Masters World Triathlon,which included a 1,500 metre swim, 40 kilometre bike course and a 10 kilometre run. Hans came out thewater in 9th place, off the bike in 7th and ran down the 3rd place athlete to take home the bronze medalfor Canada.

At the 2006 World Age Group Championships, where nearly 3,000 athletes from 70 countries raced,Hans was the only Canadian male to win a medal, and was selected as group captain.

Hans’ coach, former Olympic coach Barrie Shepley said “If Hans was 25 years younger, he would verylikely be heading to Beijing in 12 months as an Olympian. Having missed the opportunity in his youth, hewill continue to win races all over the world, and help coach future teenagers who will one day becomeOlympians themselves”.

Prior to moving to Canada and making Brampton proud, Hans spent a significant amount of time swimmingas part of a world-record relay team and championship rescue team in Germany.
