James Clevely
James Clevely’s background in Lacrosse dates back to 1930, when at the age of 16 he was theteam ”mascot” for the Brampton Excelsior Jr “A” OLA champions. In 1931 he played with theBrampton Juveniles, who won the Ontario Lacrosse Association Championship. He played for theBrampton Excelsior Senior “A” teams in the O.A.L.A in 1932, 1933, 1935 and 1937. Five yearslater, in 1942, Clevely’s playing career ended and his coaching career began.
Clevely’s coaching achievements won him three Ontario Championships, one in Midget in 1944and two in Juvenile in 1945 and 1946. In 1948, he guided the Brampton Junior ‘A’ team to the Ontario LacrosseAssociation finals. He also coached an Intermediate team in Georgetown in the late 1950’s. In addition to histwenty-five years of coaching, Clevely’s interests expanded to various executive roles.
Clevely took an active role as an executive member of the Brampton Minor Lacrosse Association. He advancedthrough the ranks of the Executive and served a term as President. He also helped the formation of theLakeshore Lacrosse League, opening the door for competition of Brampton teams in West Toronto.
Clevely also coached and managed many teams in Brampton Minor Hockey Association at both the HouseLeague and “All Star/Rep” levels, mostly in Novice and Peewee from the mid 50’s through the early 60’s.
Clevely spent most of his life dedicating his time and talents to lacrosse and the youth of ourcommunity, until his death in 1976.
