Lorene Hatelt
Lorene Hatelt has been a member of Triathlon Canada’s national team for three yearsand is an incredible three time International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Champion inthe Physically Challenged (PC) “les autres” classifi cation. She is the current reigningchampion for this gruelling Olympic distance triathlon, which consists of a 1.5 kilometreswim, a 40 kilometre bicycle race and a 10 kilometre run. She successfully defended herworld championship title in Perth, Australia at the 2000 competition. Previous ITU WorldChampionships were captured in 1999 in Montreal and in 1998 in Sylvania, Ohio.
In addition to her World Championship victories, Lorene captured fi rst place at the2000 Edmonton, Alberta ITU, where she qualified for the 2001 World Championships. Otherprestigious fi rst place fi nishes included the Toronto, Ontario ITU on July 8, 2000, the 1999 MadeiraBeach, Florida Triathlon, the 1999 Leamington, Ontario Triathlon and the 1999 Sylvania Triathlonheld in Ohio, U.S.A.
Originally from Calgary, Lorene moved to Bramalea in 1969. She played softball in the ChinguacousyGirls Minor Softball Association as a youth, moving on to the Bramalea Ladies Softball Associationas an adult. Recently Lorene has become involved with the ITU Triathlon’s governing body forthe International Olympic Committee, heading the committee for the Physically Challenged in aneffort to get the triathlon into the Parolympics. In 2000 Lorene was part of the planning committeefor the Toronto Triathlon.
Lorene’s goal is to achieve the highest level in the sport of triathlon, while promoting the abilitiesof the physically challenged.
