Luciano Borsato

Borsato’s distinguished sports career began in Brampton in 1974 when he began playing forChinguacousy Minor Soccer, where he won a Canadian Championship and three OntarioCups. After playing minor hockey in the Chinguacousy system, he became a member ofthe Bramalea Blues Jr. ‘B’ team, and was named its MVP. Borsato was drafted after hisJr. ’B’ season in 1984 in the seventh round by the Winnipeg Jets of the National HockeyLeague.

Borsato then went on to enjoy four successful hockey seasons at Clarkson University inNew York State, receiving All-America honours his final year, in 1987-88. Later that year,he went to play in Tampere, Finland for his first year as a professional.

In total, Borsato played professional hockey for fourteen years, four of them in the NHL with the WinnipegJets, from 1991-95. In 1995, he moved to Europe to play for Cologne in the top German ProfessionalHockey League. He played professionally for seven more years in Europe, five in Germany, with stopsin Finland and Switzerland.

Borsato’s statistics in the NHL were as follows; 203 games played, 35 goals, 55 assists and 113 penaltyminutes. As a versatile forward who could play many different roles, Borsato took home the bronze medalat the World Hockey Championship in Sweden in 1995 as a member of Team Canada. Some well-knownplayers that he played with or against include legendary stars Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, TeemuSelanne and Steve Yzerman.

A team leader and mentor to younger players during his professional hockey career, Borsato hassupported young athletes by coaching minor hockey and soccer since his retirement in 2002. Hecontributes to his local community through his company, Brampton Media Corp and itsmain website division, brampton.com.
